Once again, the talented industrial designer, Yiannis Georgaras is being awarded with the internationally recognized Red Dot Award in the category of product design. This time, reason of the award is the metallic door handle which was designed for and produces by the Greek company Convex. Ergonomics, design and functionality are the three principal features which made the specific product stick out and thanks to which Georgaras won the much-desired… red dot!
Its design is based on three guiding principles: elasticity, visual continuity and purity. Georgaras has created an imaginary line between the lock and the handle, resulting that the metal loses its rigidity and gains the most possible elasticity. At the same time, he does not use any kind of connecting elements such as screws so as the handle to look like it magically attaches to the wooden door and it constitutes an integral part of it. The statement of the Jury was sufficient, “The clear, purist and decidedly elegant design is proof of great aesthetic and functional quality.”
It is the second time that the designer is being awarded –the first one was in 2008 for the TETRA stool, fact that establishes him among the most significant designers of his generation. Besides, the term Red Dot Award automatically implies that the awarded product and its designer are included among the elite of the designing and business world.
